Lipstick has been going through a little revolution. There is something about a classic creamy lipstick texture that is wonderfully reminiscent and glamorous but, makes me, and I think many, feel ‘made up’ and a little self conscious – often resulting in it being wiped off just before leaving the house.
There is now every combination of hybrid lipstick on the market but for today I’d like to sing the praises of matt lipsticks in all their new and wonderful formulations. The great thing about the matt lip trend is you can get away with a much more punchy colour without it looking ‘Hey, look at me I’m wearing bold lipstick’. Many of the new formulations feel velvety and weightless (and on the whole non drying), making it easy to forget you have any on.
All the brands do them and they usually come in 3 forms: most unexpectedly with a wand (more commonly used with a gloss), as a crayon or a traditional lipstick bullet. The cheaper brands have some great textures but unfortunately the colour selection is often limited to 4 or 5 hard to wear, trend led shades. So, here is my selection of matt lipsticks with a lovely texture AND a good range of wearable colours:
Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lipstick £8.99: Incredible lightweight velvety texture that really lasts.
Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution £23.00: Wonderful shade selection. Walk of Shame is lovely on pale skin.
YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats £25.00: Small selection of great reds.
YSL Baby Doll Kiss & Blush £27.00: If you love lips and cheeks the same shade, as I do, these have the added bonus of coming in a beautiful velvety matt texture.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil £18.00: This jumbo crayon is gorgeous & bold
